Character Background
• History: Anakin Solo @ Wookiepedia
• Core Relationships:
Tahiri Veila: his best friend and eventual love interest. Tahiri's talkative and energetic nature complemented his quiet reserve from the beginning. He trusts her with fears and doubts that he's unwilling to share even with his closest family. Likewise, he supports and comforts her after intense torture nearly erases her entire identity. Their dedication to each other and strength in the Force make them intensely powerful together.
Mara Jade (Skywalker): a Jedi Master and Luke's wife. He's fiercely protective of her as family but somewhat deferential to her as a master. During their time together on Dantooine, she taught him not to rely on the Force for everything. Under her tutelage, he became physically stronger and more observant of others. He learned that sometimes the most direct way of helping someone isn't the best: sometimes helping someone help themselves is better. He took that advice to heart and continued to follow it even long after. The two of them have a strong Force connection-- he even felt echoes of her labor pains while she was giving birth to his cousin.
Vua Rapuung: a former warrior for the Yuuzhan Vong and eventual ally. Vua Rapuung needed Anakin's skill with a lightsaber, and Anakin needed his help rescuing his friend, Tahiri, from the Yuuzhan Vong compound. They saved each other's lives multiple times during their tenuous partnership, eventually earning each other's trust and respect. His time with Vua Rapuung helped him understand his enemy, the Yuuzhan Vong and see that they are not a monolith. Through him, Anakin learned about their culture and traditions. With his help, Anakin was able to rescue Tahiri. And with Anakin's help, Vua Rapuung was able to expose his ex-lover's treachery-- she poisoned him and caused disfigurement that would mark him as a Shamed One, who is punished by the gods. His name was cleared and his honor restored. In helping each other, Anakin and Vua Rapuung created a mythos among the slaves and Shamed Ones that challenged the prevailing belief that Shamed Ones cannot be redeemed.
Master Ikrit: a Master from the old Order and Anakin's mentor. While Mara Jade taught Anakin not to rely strictly on the Force, Ikrit taught Anakin how to plumb its depths. He acted as Anakin's Master, protector, and friend. His keen insight into Anakin's nature and his wisdom in the ways of not only the Force but people in general acted as a guide for Anakin on multiple occasions. Ikrit saw training and protecting Anakin and Tahiri as his purpose. He acted as a steadying force for both of them, and his death devastated them both. They shared a strong familial love and connection with each other in the Force.
Luke Skywalker: his uncle and Jedi master, Anakin models himself off of his uncle (or, at least, his perception of his uncle). He once saw his uncle as unshakeable and undefeatable, but the recent incursion of the Yuuzhan Vong and the resulting straing put on the Order has shaken that once-solid image he'd had. Still, even when they disagree, Anain remains completely loyal to his uncle and trusts his judgement.
Jaina Solo: his older sister and a hot-shot pilot. Anakin and his siblings were raised by a mix of people, either when they were hidden away for their protection or when their parents were otherwise occupied dealing with the complications arising throught the galaxy in a post-Empire era. Jaina is one of his best friends, and the sibling he tries to emulate the most. She's also his go-to person in the family for conversation and comfort.
Jacen Solo: his older brother and twin of Jaina. Anakin and his brother got along well as young children, even with their differing temperaments and interests. As they got older, though, their differing opinions on the way the Force should be used and on the future of the Jedi created a rift between them. While Jacen argued that the Jedi should return to a more "traditional" strictly monastic order, Anakin argued that such a shift would entail the Jedi turning their back on the galaxy. Jacen advocates pacificism whereas Anakin sees the Force as a tool to be used to protect and bring peace. In spite of this rift caused by their own complex struggles, Anakin and his brother are still close. Jacen offers Anakin comfort; Anakin offers Jacen insight.
Han Solo: his father, who Anakin had once idolized as a hero. Multiple outsiders have commented on how similar in temperament father and son can be, which is also a source of frustration for two stubborn people. His father's reaction to Chewbacca's death deeply affected Anakin, who blamed himself for it. Han's decline into depression and the knee-jerk response he made to Anakin immediately after Chewbacca's death has created a sharp rift between father and son. It has also caused Anakin to withdraw from his father.
Leia Organa-Solo: his mother, from whom he gets his serious nature. Unlike his relationship with his brother and father, his relationship with his mother is steady and they share a strong bond in the Force. Their bond is so strong that she can "hear" him call out to her in the Force and see the stars from his perspective in order to find him.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
Freeing the Massassi Children's Souls
On his very first day at the Jedi Academy, Anakin befriended Tahiri and uncovered a conspiracy: Sith from centuries before had trapped the spirits of the native Massassi children to fuel some terrible experiment. Upon discovering this and knowing he and Tahiri were the only ones who could break the curse, Anakin set out with single-mided focus to break the curse. He showed ingenuity by figuring out the puzzle to get into the locked tomb that held the golden orb with the children's souls inside. He also showed courage by refusing to leave the underground cavern even with the leftover Dark energy trying to scare both himself and Tahiri into leaving. He also showed determination when they finally freed the children-- he entered the globe itself in order to pull the children's spirits out to safety, at great risk to himself.
Helping a Friend Keep a Promise
It turns out that, as part of a deal to bring Tahiri to the Temple, Luke Skywalker agreed to send Tahiri back to her home planet of Tatooine in order to give her "family" the news as to whether she was staying with the order or returning to them. What he didn't know is that Tahiri was agreeing to undergo a trial that was agreed upon when she was adopted by the Sand People. Tahiri would be driven to a spot in the desert and told to return home with no supplies or aid provided. Anakin showed loyalty and invited himself along with her. Over the course of several days, they traveled through the unforgiving desert. He showed compassion and foresight in fixing a Sand Crawler, thereby getting aid from other desert-dwellers.
The Rescue on Yavin IV
This is one of those events that is a net negative for him, but displays both his strengths and weaknesses well. He receives a vision of his friend, Tahiri, in the grip of the Yuuzhan Vong. He tries to sound the alarm that the Jedi Temple Tahiri is at is in grave danger. Although Luke and his mother take it seriously and have already put someone out there to watch over the Temple, Anakin is not satisfied and takes matters into his own hands. He flies to Yavin IV. He has good intuition but can be impulsive. He has a tendency to plan for the short-term but not account for the after-effects in the long-term. Flying out to Yavin IV meant that he had to forge documents in order to depart, which took time and planning. However, he didn't foresee that this action would reflect poorly on Luke and give political firepower to Luke's enemies. He does something similar in setting part of the forest of Yavin IV on fire-- it helped him at the time, but it also lead to massive destruction. It wasn't until after it was too late that he realized he'd killed innocent creatures and destroyed their homes in order to achieve his goal.
This ordeal also showed other, more positive aspects of his character. While on a mission to rescue his friend, Anakin was sort of strong-armed into helping a disgraced Yuuzhan Vong warrior. Despite being enemies, Anakin was able to work alongside an enemy toward a common goal: his pragmatism overcame his stubbornness. He also showed tenacity by spending weeks traveling to the other side of the moon in order to find his friend, hardly resting or stopping to eat. His mastery of the Force gave him the strength but his loyalty and devotion gave him the will.
The Fall of Seripidal
Anakin, Han, and Chewbacca are sent on a mission to pick up some cargo for Lando Calrissian. Once they arrive, however, they are greeted with a strange sight-- the people of Seripidal praying to the moon goddess, and the moon having fallen out of its proper orbit. Here, Anakin displayed his compassion in assisting his father with the haphazard evacuation they set up, going as far as to leave the safety of their ship in order to rescue a cargo ship full of evacuees trapped by debris and to help carry a toddler to safety aboard the Falcon. At the very end, Anakin was forced to make a hard choice. The planet was about to be destroyed and debris was threatening to destroy the Falcon and the refugees on board. However, Chewie was still on the planet, though not immediately reachable. He was forced to decide if they should fly to safety or attempt a rescue with so many lives on the line and essentially no chance of success. Anakin put his oath toward others, his dutiful nature above his personal wishes. This event shook him and caused him to withdraw and second-guess himself. Although he'd done the "correct" thing, he'd always wonder if he did the "right" thing.
